Lucap. - The Philippine Tourism Authority - Hundred Island
National Park began its second year of its coral reef and giant
clam restoration program. The PTA is using the services of two teams
from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Marine
Science Institute.
|
|
The first team of scientists is surveying various
sites to study the impact of dynamite and cyanide fishing on
the coral reef. |
|
|
They will also transplant healthy coral in highly
impacted areas to restore and promote popluation growth. |
|
|
The second team will be doing similar studies
and transplanting of the giant
clams. |
|
|
Both teams will be in the Hundred
Island for the next eight weeks. |

It has been suggested by German Environmentalist/Agriculturalist
Carstan Haub that the next appropriate step is the education
of the local fishermen. They need to know the importance of
the coral reefs in maintaining sustainable yields, that only
with the restoration of the coral reefs will their daily catches
equal that of the past. Hopefully, they will take the initiative
and organize groups or associations that will assume the restoration,
and of equally importance, the maintenance of the coral reefs. |
